Barcelona for Newcomers
This course has been created for foreign residents of Barcelona who for professional or personal reasons are living in the metropolitan area, and are interested in learning more about the history, culture and society of their new city of residence.
The course will offer a broad overview of the history of Barcelona, from the Roman period until the
urban expansion period of the late 19th century, exploring in particular the artistic and
architectural phenomenon which flourished in Barcelona at the time; called modernisme in Catalonia,
it is commonly referred to as Art Nouveau in other parts of Europe and the United States. The
course will also cover the city under the repression of the Francoist dictatorship, the revival of
Catalan civil society after the transition to democracy, and will discuss the complicated and often
confusing relationship between Catalonia and Spain.
The course will be held exclusively in English, and will take place over four classes: each
class will run from 11:00 until 12:45 (each class will last 90 minutes, with a 15 minute break)
We are offering four sections of the same module, which we hope will give you flexibility in
choosing the dates which best fit your schedule.
